Desmond spent his early years of practice at Messrs Allen & Gledhill and Messrs Rajah & Tann before becoming Managing Partner of niche firm Messrs J Koh & Co.  Within 2 years, Messrs J Koh & Co grew to a firm of sixty employees across offices in 4 jurisdictions. In 1999, Messrs J Koh & Co became a member firm of the DLA Group and subsequently merged with DLA in 2003.

Desmond has expertise in building construction and infrastructure issues, as well as in commercial and securities disputes. He also advises on general corporate matters, with an emphasis on mergers and acquisitions, particularly in the realm of listed companies.

Desmond has been consistently named as a leading/recommended individual in the 2000 - 2007 editions of the Asia Pacific Legal 500, in both the Dispute Resolution and Corporate categories - one of the very few individuals to be cited in both sections. Desmond has also been cited by Asian Legal Business as one of the hottest 100 lawyers in Asia in 2008 (in "The Statesmen" category).
