Introduction

Challenges facing the financial institutions sector

The financial institutions sector operates against a backdrop of rapid development, managed risk, stringent regulation and fluctuating economic conditions. As the current economic outlook tightens, however, the vulnerability of the sector is coming under ever-increasing scrutiny and the operating environment for firms remains pressured.

With business models being tested, the need for firms to mitigate risk and adapt to market conditions is paramount. Businesses require their advisers to combine technical expertise with market insight and experience.

How we can help

Our dedicated sector group offers the benefit of over two decades of experience advising in relation to the issues and developments impacting upon the market. Few law firms are able to marry industry-specific skills with the depth of resource offered by us in the financial institutions arena, and with over 600 clients the sector is a primary focus of the firm.

This broad base of clients reflects both the longstanding nature of the team's relationships and the range of firms it has experience in advising. The market's many players do not operate in isolation, and neither do the experts in our team. Its structure brings together specialist practitioners with specific expertise advising across the retail and institutional markets and its various intermediaries. Cross-functional client teams allow us to bring a wide range of legal experience and relevant industry knowledge to each deal.

Reflective of our position in the market is the team's ability to influence what is happening in the sector and to do more for our clients than "the next deal". Central to this are the close relationships we have developed with industry bodies and other key organisations in the sector. These include, amongst others, the Financial Services Authority (FSA), Investment Management Association (IMA), Finance & Leasing Association (FLA), Association of British Insurers (ABI), HM Treasury and the Centre for the Study of Financial Innovation (CSFI).

The group works with an array of leading businesses from across the sector's core markets:
