Commercial law
Commercial law covers the aspects of the law that concern businesses and the way they operate. We protect people's ideas, advise local councils, advise on contractual issues, and deal with software agreements. We have expertise in EU and competition, intellectual property, IT and e-commerce, franchising, local government and education projects.
Eversheds is one of the few law firms in the UK to offer a devoted 200-strong commercial team. We cover a wide variety of specialisms and sectors, but we all work in the same way: using a project management approach to deliver a great service. So what does that mean? Well, it allows you to build great relationships with your clients by providing them with predictability in terms of costs, timescales and the way the job is carried out. It also makes your life easier by allowing you to properly manage your own time and ensure you have the resources you need.
The advantage of working for one of the world's largest law firms isn't just about the facilities, support and respect you'll get. It's about stretching yourself and using the skills that made you want to be a lawyer in the first place. You would be working alongside world class colleagues doing the biggest jobs for major clients including global brands, local governments, IT specialists, major insurance companies, telecoms giants, energy providers and a wide variety of businesses. You'll be given responsibility but you'll also be provided with the chance to develop your talents in the way you want to through our extensive range of training courses.
Eversheds is a home for ambitious commercial lawyers. Those who like a challenge and enjoy innovating in the law as well as advising on it. Get in touch and find out what we can do for you.
Personal perspective
Kate Withers, Associate
"Why should you join Eversheds? The great work, the supportive team and the quality of life. There are no compromises here.
"What I like about Eversheds is the fact you get quality work and clients as well as a good lifestyle, which is often lacking in the Magic Circle firms. Although I'm based in Manchester the instructions I receive are the kind you would expect in London.
"I work in IP and our clients' needs are always changing in this field. As a team we've been heavily involved in the retail sector and it has been really been interesting to see the increasing focus on the Internet. More and more goods are being sold online and people are more confident about buying them. That's really coloured the type of work we do.
"We all tend to have own areas of specialism and there's plenty of scope for you to find your niche and settle down in it. Once you have enough experience there's a lot of flexibility about what you can do, allowing you to concentrate on the areas you enjoy, marketing your skills in that area and working out how you can best serve your clients. It's never a case of ‘here's all the files your partner is working and you will do them even if it's outside your area of expertise and interest.'
"The specific support available includes an external course at the University of Bristol that all our IP lawyers go on, which helps you think commercially and not just like a lawyer. Similar courses are available for all our commercial lawyers and there are many opportunities to develop yourself in general.
"I've just been made up as an associate and I knew exactly what I needed to do to get there. I was very pleasantly surprised by the wide variety of things that were taken into account when I was going for the position. I think there tends to be a perception in large firms that it's all about what you bill and the clients you bring in. But it wasn't a case of taking an arbitrary number and then billing above it. A very wide spectrum of issues are considered."
