Age@work

From 1 October 2006, age discrimination is unlawful in employment and vocational training. This profoundly challenges the practices of every employer and every employee.

Employment tribunals expect employers to take all reasonable steps to prevent harassment and discrimination. Our courses can be used to explain to your employees the importance of policies and complaint procedures and can, therefore, help to limit the risk arising from inappropriate workplace behaviour. Training like this may also help to reduce your employer liability premiums.

The age@work course describes the different types of unlawful age discrimination, together with the consequences of getting it wrong. Case study scenarios and interactive exercises are used to demonstrate ways of avoiding unfair behaviours based on age, supported by practical examples to guide your organisation and all of your employees through the new legislation.

The course objectives

The objectives of this course are to:

  • explain the importance of age quality at work, and each employee's vital role in making that happen
  • outline the different types of unlawful age discrimination and what they mean
  • highlight how to avoid practices and actions that discriminate against workers on the grounds of age, including attitudes of co-workers - particularly, in relation to recruitment, promotion, performance management, retirement, and redundancy
  • explain the legal and other consequences arising from workplace age discrimination
  • describe how to respond to workers bringing complaints of workplace age discrimination and harassment.

Who is the course for?

Whilst a key area of vulnerability for an employer is their line managers, it is the employer's responsibility to educate their workers on compliance and their responsibility to uphold all age diversity programmes in the workplace. For that reason, one version of this course is for all managers and supervisors with people management duties and another version is designed for employees.

Our courses are:

  • highly interactive, requiring the learner to answer questions on real situations and think through the issues around fairness and diversity at work
  • focused on good practice, not just the law
written by an HR professional who is also a practising employment lawyer
  • based on HR best practice and situations encountered by Eversheds' leading team of employment lawyers
  • delivered over the web and compatible with standard personal computer technology
  • updated automatically as the law changes
  • based on educational psychology principles, and using latest instructional and new media design
  • hosted on Eversheds' Learning Management System LMS) for your convenience (alternatively our SCORM compliant course may be hosted on your LMS).

Why e-learning?

We believe there will always be a need for face-to-face training but e-learning is:

  • flexible and convenient - learners participate at any time of their choosing and at their own pace. The course can be taken on any PC with a high speed Internet connection
  • efficient and inexpensive - this course enables you to train large numbers of people simultaneously or in a short time period, irrespective of whether they workshifts or in dispersed locations
  • up-to-date and consistent - you know what your colleagues have been told and when
  • backed by records and reports - through the learning management system you can track each learner's progress on the course and see when the course was taken, the duration and the assessment results
    easy to administer and monitor

Our e-learning tools are being used:

  • for stand-alone training and assessment
  • as part of induction and orientation, and for promotion candidates
  • as a precursor to face-to-face training
  • as an audit check, using the assessment results to identify attitudes and awareness, and further training needs
  • for revision following face-to-face training.
