Companies must ensure that systems are in place to make sure everyone knows the law, and what was being done in the company's name. Ethics@work, launched in October, is intended to make clear, in plain English, which situations should cause alarm, what a whistleblower’s duties are and what the consequences of 'inappropriate' behaviour may be.
Michael Binyon, The Times
2 January 2010

What is it?

Ethics@work is an interactive online course designed to educate directors, managers and employees at all levels of your organisation on the importance of conducting their workplace activities in a responsible and ethical manner.

Who is it for?

Ethics@work is aimed at all organisations who care about ethical conduct.

Why is this important?

A failure to live up to high standards can damage your reputation, lead to lengthy investigations and could involve possible prosecution. A good reputation is a key part of a company's commercial success. In a recession, the risk of unethical and potentially illegal conduct increases. A code of ethical business conduct is the first step towards managing that risk, but the critical challenge is to embed ethical values within your company's culture.

What is covered?

Ethics@work brings to life a company's code of ethical business conduct and puts in place an effective system for training staff on important ethical and legal issues including:

  • bribery and corruption
  • fraud
  • conflict of interest
  • environmental
  • health and safety
  • employment (harassment, discrimination).

Objectives

The objectives of Ethics@work are to:

  • communicate your organisation's ethics policy or code of conduct
  • demonstrate your organisation's commitment to complying with ethics and laws against bribery, corruption and cartels
  • raise awareness of common ethical issues applicable to your organisation's activities
  • help the workforce understand the importance of making considered ethical judgements, in particular, avoiding the giving or receiving of bribes
  • explain the consequences of inappropriate behaviour
  • explain your organisation's policy for reporting inappropriate behaviour
  • create a deeper culture of ethical behaviour.
